When my sweetheart Sam and I got engaged in April 2013 while hiking in Iceland, and decided to get married that October, we knew we wanted our wedding to reflect our passions and the values we share.

We love being outside and experiencing nature, so we knew our reception location had to be a rustic, outdoor venue where our guests could experience the beauty of fall in New England. We chose Sweet Berry Farm for its picturesque orchard rows, abundant autumn produce, and colorful surrounding foliage. I wanted our wedding to feel as organic as possible, so everything was kept natural and unmanicured: fallen apples were left on the ground; all florals were locally-sourced and in-season; chairs and tables were built of reclaimed Rhode Island barnwood; and the flowers in my crown were found on a nearby roadside.

As many things as possible we made ourselves; from the favors to the programs. What we couldn’t do ourselves, we outsourced to small businesses and artisans. We also wanted our wedding to reflect our desire to live in harmony with the living things around us. All of the food and desserts, my dress and shoes, the bridesmaids’ dresses, Sam’s suit and bowtie, were made without harm to animals or people.

With grad school starting just a month before, I relied on many wonderful wedding professionals throughout the planning process to achieve my vision for our special day. Thanks to their support and expertise, our wedding turned out to be a perfect reflection of our shared passions and the life we are building together.
